Long-Distance Godparenting is no excuse for not getting to know your Godchild. In fact, knowing distance is an obstacle should motivate you to spend as much time together as possible. See 6 Tips For Long-Distance God-Parenting for other tips on how to cope with a long-distance god-parenting relationship.
I made the most of my time in Barbados with my God-daughter Anna. She is a really precious baby; a real angel and truly well behaved. You know, I’m learning more and more about the unique personalities of children.
Anna is one of those ‘sunny’ babies. You cannot be in her presence for long and not find yourself laughing like an idiot. This is one such conversation with her grandmother who will also be doing some long-distance grand-mothering.
First time we met, she stared intently at me and then she bestowed upon me, that which every adult craves when meeting any baby for the first time. This is one such example of her intense look of concentration…
And then she smiled. And I was lost….
What a smile…all unashamed of her gums. Eyes crinkled up, mouth working around sounds you are certain is language from another planet and yet you understand so well that the child is telling you, ‘Aunty, your funny faces make you look like an idiot, but I like you’.
Well apart from doing silly things just for an Anna smile or laugh I had to remember that I’m not Godmother because I make the best funny faces. Nope. It’s a lot of work taking care of an active child. God parents would do well to remember that ours is a hands-on relationship. When we are around, the parents should get a break while we help out with taking care of our Godchild.
So we had the morning baths to get done. Sorry, I’m not posting any pictures of those private moments. Too many children are being exploited online by some really sick adults. When was the last time you bathed a 4 month old who likes water? Have you ever held a small slippery baby? Thankfully, I wasn’t too rusty in that department.
There was baby’s hair to wash and comb. Combing a baby’s hair can take what feels like hours especially if she is not asleep.
And food to eat …and the spoon gives a great gummies massage too. [Hey Aunty, I’m teething and looking forward to biting you when next I see you]
Camera happy adults to entertain…..
Please Aunty…enough already with the camera! Gaawssh
So I’ll quit. For now. However, I assure you that you will be seeing more pictures and hear more about the development of my God-parenting skills.
More god-daughter tales to come,
